Pop-up community space

Multifunctional mobile display furniture

CLIENT: Quartermasters

CATEGORY: Arts and Culture

PROJECT TYPE: Mobile display furniture, design and fabrication

LOCATION: Birmingham, UK

MATERIALS: Birch plywood, fabric, fixings

PHOTOGRAPHER: Crumb

APPROACH:

Quartermasters, a Birmingham-based maker collective, commissioned us to design and make a pop-up community space and mobile display for the back of their vintage Pashley Picador trike.

We created a transformative, multi-functional display which can easily be adapted to showcase craft products at different events. It had to be easy to assemble, fun, but not gimmicky! Design details incorporated in the linear qualities of the trike’s framework and the red dots seen in the Picador logo.

The display utilises pegboard panels which can be used to display items on both sides, using shelves or beech dowels, which can be configured in several ways. It cleverly folds out to create tables which are cantilevered to hold the weight on stripy webbing and closes again with bungee cords for transportation. We included an extra display tray, which is carried on the front handlebars, optimising space and then everything flat packs to carry during a journey!
