Adaptive display furniture

Freestanding and flexible display for the School of Jewellery

CLIENT: Vittoria Street Gallery, Birmingham City University

CATEGORY: Arts and Culture

PROJECT TYPE: Exhibition display furniture, design and fabrication

LOCATION: Birmingham, UK

MATERIALS: Birch Plywood

PHOTOGRAPHER: Dual Works

APPROACH:

We collaborated with the exhibitions team at the School of Jewellery to create a set of display screens which could be used to showcase a variety of exhibition materials and had to be quick to set up.

Our solution was to design and make a freestanding, flexible and adaptive system to enable these screens to be configured in a variety of ways. Hinged panels allow these screens to be folded for easy storage and then opened up to 90 degrees for display purposes.

The functionality of these screens will help to save time with the preparation and installation of exhibitions hosted by the Gallery and wider graduate shows. They need to be straightforward, uncomplicated and offer a solution which is less onerous than their current methods of displaying 2D or 3D artwork.

These were made in birch plywood, and the horizontal linear design creates a light, airy and contemporary aesthetic that complements the School’s award-winning atrium.
