Public House

In collaboration with Intervention Architecture, we were invited to fabricate furniture designs for a new cultural space for Birmingham, a non-profit space for writing, books, and artists’ films in the city centre.

Intervention Architecture worked with the founders, Seán Elder and Emma McKinney, from the outset of their crowdfunding drive, for Public House and designed the transformation of an unused shop space into a new space with co-working, a library and an artistic programme of events and talks.

The space hosts both a programme devised by curators, in the form of screenings, discussions and other art events contributing to Birmingham’s visual culture, as well as being an open resource for the city’s creative community, available for hire in a city where a majority of artist-run spaces suffer from a lack of accessibility and public transport links.

Our involvement was the fabrication of moveable furniture for the space that enables multi-functional working zones. Timber battens were used to create shelving and display, with a welcoming arrival frame to divide the front library from the rear co-working spaces.

These limited editions, journals, monographs, exhibition catalogues and other associated works are available to browse in their library and are for sale on their website. Their future plans include curating artist readings, performances and events.
