Optical
We were challenged by lead optometrist Matt Rose to transform a tired and dysfunctional optician’s consultation room at Brittain Opticians.
Brittain Opticians is an independent optician and eyewear specialist located on the high street in Harborne, Birmingham. Firmly established in the neighbourhood, they offer a personalised service, expert eyecare and design-led eyewear.
Central to the design concept is a playful illuminated lighting feature which showcases different coloured glasses lenses. This focal point and conversation starter provides an ambient lighting effect by varying colour, vibrancy and tone.
Our design approach was sensitive and complementary to the detail-oriented, high-quality eyewear carefully curated within this eyewear store.
We reconfigured the space to function more effectively to suit the needs of the team and focus on showcasing the specialist equipment by framing the optical devices. Alongside this, it was important to create a warm, inviting, and non-medical environment with a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.
We addressed the functionality of the room and transformed a cluttered and awkward space by incorporating a work area, specialist tool storage, a paperwork filing pocket, and an eye wash area. We paired this with a feature worktop made of recycled yoghurt pots by Smile plastic, which adds a subtle textural element and a fresh, clean work surface. Repositioning the workspace enabled a more ergonomic relationship with the diagnostic chair and lens testing equipment, which was located in an easily accessible drawer. A vibrant yellow colour palette complements the brand identity already established, the material qualities of the birch plywood, and valchromat light feature help to visually soften the clinical equipment by adding warmth and texture.
